Chapter Eight

“Worthless to the cause?” Raith sputtered. He kicked a rock and sent it skittering along the asphalt of the alley they walked.

I heard him, Nox replied.

“Rhett was a Soul Adept! Why would he say that?” Raith asked.

Nox’s silence made Raith realize what he had said. He reached the closest wall and sank down to a sitting position. The bricks poked into the burn scars along his back. He used the dull, familiar pain to center himself. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.”

I know, Nox said with a hint of wryness to his tone. You’re impassioned and he was rude. Give it time.

“How is time supposed to help anything?” Raith demanded to the air around them. “Icera’s getting stronger and the Underground is weak enough that they have to depend on demons for safety and that’s sketchy at best.” He glanced at the demon on his shoulder. “No offense, Breezy.”

The demon rubbed her head along his chin like a cat. Her fluffs of black fur tickled his skin.

Raith ran a finger down her scales and sighed. “How do I go back there and admit that I failed?”

We failed, Nox reminded him. Regardless of what the chancellor thinks about Soul Elementals, we’re in this together.

Raith ran his hands through his hair. If he had to admit the truth, the thing that bothered him the most was the reprimand in Ambry’s gaze. They had shared something so special and private, something so close to love that part of the hole in Raith’s heart felt as though it had been filled, only to be ripped away moments later. She agreed with the chancellor. The thought filled Raith with such fury he wanted to hit something.

Breathe, Nox said. His attention switched to something behind Raith. Why is Reaver here?

A chill filled Raith’s veins as he followed the wolf’s gaze to his right. The sword leaned casually about halfway down the alley. As far as Raith knew, the alley ended just past the shadows.

Can you see anything? he asked in his mind.

Something’s there.

Raith’s gaze shifted and took on the grays and duller colors of the wolf’s vision. Fortunately, the reduced colors meant better vision in the darkness. When the wolf looked into the shadows unmarred by the growing sunlight, he made out an even darker shadow. Raith’s heart slowed.

What is that?

I have no idea, the wolf replied. I haven’t smelled it before, but it’s definitely angry.

Raith rose slowly to his feet. Why are demons always angry?

Anger is a dark energy. Maybe that’s all they know.

Like attracts like? Raith said.

Exactly, Nox agreed.

What if I’m angry. Would it see me as a demon?

Nox gave a soft snort. I don’t think now is the time to figure that out.

The dark shadow moved toward Reaver. Raith knew his time to reach the sword was shortening. He stretched and pretended to casually take a step toward the weapon. A grunt sounded from the demon and it took a step forward of its own.

I see plenty of teeth, Nox pointed out.

Helpful, Raith replied.
